The number one thing you should expect from a talent agency is that they represent you honestly, and diligently. Or is that two things? A powerful talent agency behind you, seeking out great roles and doggedly getting your name out there is indeed one in a million. It is very difficult to get signed to one that will do all this for you and have the track record, reputation, and contacts to make it truly mean something.
It is the opinion of some that it is actually the talent agency, and not the studio, that pulls the puppet strings in Hollywood. A prominent talent agency with an A-list roster can literally be the catalyst responsible for bringing about the production of a film. One lunch with a couple of executives, a pitch is made which includes the combined box office draw of Angelina Jolie and Kevin Costner (an unlikely scenario to be sure), and a year later they release a new hit movie.
The talent agency has power because the studios want they people that they represent. Actors who want to make a living acting dream of being represented by a talent agency like this because they know that even though the quality of the projects is not always what might be expected from independent productions who search for and use their own pools of talent, the attraction of earning five and six figures for a film role is impossible to resist.
